This exceptional cinnabar specimen features a classic penetration twin (10mm). The crystal is a vibrant crimson red, that absolutely lights up when backlit, and has a sharp adamantine lustre when unlit. The crystal sits on a plate of clear drusy quartz and white saddled dolomite, which add textural interest and create a delicate contrast with the cinnabar. While the main crystal has a bit of contact at the tip, this does not affect the display and is really only noticeable upon close inspection.
The name “cinnabar” is derived from Arabic and Persian words meaning “dragon’s blood,” capturing the intense red colour seen in these crystals. This specimen is a classic from the early days of Chinese mineral exports, comes with a faded handwritten label that looks to be several decades old thus predating the more recent Chinese mineral boom. This display-worthy piece, with minimal damage, exemplifies the lustrous, well-formed cinnabar crystals that make Chinese cinnabar specimens a favourite among mineral enthusiasts worldwide.
