This is an exceptional, large specimen of long-fiber chrysotile (asbestos) from the Jeffrey Mine in Quebec. The fibrous crystals reach up to 27 cm in length—nearly the size of a forearm, and display a mix of beige, light green, and brown tones. The piece didn't come with a label but likely originates from the famous Jeffrey Mine, once one of the world’s largest asbestos producers, based on its appearance and its association with the other labeled Jeffrey specimens that it came with (compare to: https://www.weinrichmineralsinc.com/products/chrysotile-9201029.php). While asbestos is a much-maligned mineral, this specimen stands out as an outstanding and scientifically significant example of chrysotile.
