Carletonite

Poudrette quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, La Vallée-du-Richelieu RCM, Montérégie, Québec
Canada
Dimensions: 7.2x4.3x4.2 cm
Price: CA

This attractive miniature specimen showcases not only the characteristic colouration of carletonite, with a white periphery that quickly grades into the classic indigo-blue hue, but also the very rare violet colour as well. The crystal is mostly massive and displays cleavage over most of the specimen, though some crystal faces can be seen, this is fairly typical for the species. Some light yellow cancrinite can be seen on the specimen as well. Carletonite, a complex silicate containing carbonate, is unique to the Poudrette Quarry at Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, one of the most mineralogically diverse localities in the world. This piece represents a fine example of a rare and highly sought-after mineral, emblematic of this world-class deposit.
