This specimen primarily consists of pale yellow, scalenohedral calcite crystals with elongated prisms and short terminations. Scattered throughout are quartz crystals and drusy quartz. What makes this piece particularly interesting is the presence of two generations of calcite growth. The short scalenohedral terminations "cap" an earlier generation of sharp dog-tooth scalenohedrons, a feature that becomes more evident upon close inspection. The specimen hails from the Grant Quarry in Gloucester County, part of the Beekmantown Formation, which spans several locations, including Saratoga Springs, NY; Herkimer, NY; St-Clothilde and St-Eustache in Quebec; and Greely, Ontario. The calcite's dual growth habit and its association with quartz make it a noteworthy example from this classic geological formation.
