Calcite, Galena

West Fork Mine, West Fork, Reynolds Co., Missouri
USA
Dimensions: 6.1x5.1x3.0 cm
Largest crystal size: 58 mm
Price: CA

$420.00

Mineral specimens from the West Fork Mine are relatively uncommon compared to the more famous Sweetwater and Brushy Creek Mines of Missouri’s Viburnum Trend. This specimen features a lustrous, gemmy scalenohedral calcite crystal—a classic Tri-State combination piece with exceptional aesthetics. The large, waxy calcite crystal is well-terminated and sits beautifully alongside small galena cubes on a brecciated dolomitic limestone matrix. The calcite crystal is in fine condition with no damage, making it a superb example from this locality.

At its peak, the West Fork Mine produced an impressive 125 tons of lead per day and also yielded remarkable galena and calcite specimens, such as this one. ASARCO’s West Fork Mine, the newest operation in the Viburnum Trend, commenced production in 1985 and reached full capacity by 1988. High-quality, display-worthy cabinet specimens from this locality are exceptionally rare on the market, making this piece a true collector’s find.

This specimen comes from the collection of Dr. Peter Tarassoff, a prominent figure in mineralogy, particularly known for his work at Mont Saint-Hilaire (MSH). His diligent collecting and examination efforts have led him to be the first to identify at least 35 species and discover 12 new species, not only at MSH but also at other alkaline localities. Dubbed the "Dean" of Mont Saint-Hilaire collectors, Peter was honoured with the naming of the new species petarasite in 1980. He has authored or co-authored numerous mineralogical articles and has been a member of the Mineralogical Association of Canada since 1964. Additionally, Peter has volunteered at the Redpath Museum for the past 21 years, where he was formally appointed the Honorary Curator of Mineralogy. In recognition of his significant contributions to mineralogy, Peter was awarded the 2017 Pinch Medal
