Calcite

Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region
Namibia
Dimensions: 6.4x5.9x2.4 cm
Price: CA

This specimen is a striking cluster of calcite rhombohedrons from the world-renowned, but now-closed, Tsumeb Mine in Namibia. The piece exhibits sharp, glassy, and colourless to grey crystals with excellent lustre and transparency, characteristic of the finest examples from this classic locality.

On the display face, the lustrous rhombohedra are well-formed and densely intergrown, creating a gleaming, reflective surface. In contrast, the reverse side shows crystals that have grown in a more flattened and subdued habit, with many merging into gently rounded forms. This variation highlights the diverse crystal growth environments within Tsumeb vugs and pockets.

A superb example that comes from the well-regarded collection of Peter Tarassoff, a name well-known among Canadian collectors for his discerning eye and contributions to the feild.
