This specimen features a robust scalenohedral calcite crystal the doubly terminated with both ends exceptionally sharp and well-preserved. Some faces of the crystal have a thin coating of grey dolomite, accented by microcrystals of marcasite. The piece displays beautifully, making it an excellent showcase specimen for the locality.
It originates from the Nanisivik Mine, located in the company town of Nanisivik, Nunavut. Situated approximately 750 km (470 miles) north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island, the mine operated from October 15, 1976, to September 2002. Primarily a zinc-lead mine, Nanisivik was one of the most northerly mines in the world. While sphalerite was the principal ore, the mine gained significant recognition among collectors for producing distinctive and high-quality mineral specimens. Even after its closure, the Nanisivik Mine remains celebrated for its exceptional contributions to mineralogy.
