This specimen is a classic cluster of calcite rhombohedrons from the renowned, now-closed Tsumeb Mine. The piece displays sharp, glassy, colourless calcite crystals that vary from translucent to transparent. Lustrous, rhombohedra cover the piece, accentuated by sparkling micro-dolomite crystals preferentially encrusting the sides of some crystals. As well, scattered olive-green duftite, appears as inclusions and surface coatings on some of the calcite. The calcite crystals at the base are clearer near the top, and becoming more opaque toward the top, creating a captivating visual gradient. The selective micro-dolomite encrustation on some rhombohedral faces adds texture to the specimen.
Dr. Tarassoff acquired this piece from the Mineral Kingdom of Woodmere at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in 1980. This specimen embodies the unique mineralogical diversity of Tsumeb, capturing a fine blend of crystal clarity, subtle colour contrast, and intricate associations characteristic of this famed locality.
