This specimen showcases a large phlogopite crystal that has naturally fractured into several sections, elegantly perched atop a sandy matrix composed of massive green-blue apatite crystals. The specimen originates from Cantley, Quebec, a region with a rich mining history dating back to the 1890s. During this period, mining played a significant role in Cantley's economy and daily life.
Initially, small mines in Cantley were opened to extract phosphate (apatite), but the focus shifted to mica once its value as an electrical insulator was recognized. Cantley’s abundant, high-quality mica became especially sought after during World War II. Among the most prominent of these mica mines were the Dacey Mine and the Blackburn Mine, the latter operating from 1878 until 1964 and being particularly valuable for its mica production. This historical context adds depth to the specimen, connecting it to the broader narrative of Cantley’s mining legacy.*
