Beryl (var. Emerald)

Bay D'Espoir Highway, Great Gull Scheelite prospects, Great Gull Lake, Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador
Canada
Dimensions: 1.4x1.1x1.3 cm
Price: CA

$50.00

This specimen represents most of a single pale-green euhedral crystal of beryl, showing some prismatic form and subtle vitreous lustre. The crystal’s light green colouration suggests a chromium- or vanadium-bearing composition, typical of emerald, though not confirmed by analysis in this case.

It comes from the Great Gull Scheelite prospects, situated along the Bay D’Espoir Highway in central Newfoundland, a little-known locality that has recently attracted attention for its unusual beryl occurrences. According to an article published in Gems & Gemology (Spring 2024, Vol. 60, No. 1), some crystals from this same site have been positively identified as emerald, marking one of the few such discoveries in Atlantic Canada.

This piece is a representative example from the newly documented occurrence. Specimens from the Great Gull Scheelite prospects remain exceedingly scarce in collections.
