Astrophyllite

Poudrette quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, La Vallée-du-Richelieu RCM, Montérégie, Québec
Canada
Dimensions: 4.7x3.3x3.3 cm
Price: CA

This striking specimen of astrophyllite features well-defined, divergent sprays of slender, needle-like crystals radiating in a captivating starburst formation. The crystals exhibit a rich, reddish-brown to golden hue with a highly lustrous, sub-metallic sheen and perfect cleavage and are accompanied by the presence of micro aegirine crystals on one side of the matrix. The specimen has a dazzling visual effect that is even more impressive in person. Astrophyllite, is a titanium silicate, and derives its name from the Greek words “astron,” meaning star, and “phyllon,” meaning leaf, a fitting tribute to its characteristic starburst or leaf-like crystal habit. This specimen is a top-notch example of this rare and visually stunning mineral.

*The original label has Vancouver Island listed as the locality, I've yet to see any evidence of astrophyllite coming from there. Would love to be proved wrong though! This looks like classic MSH Astrophyllite to me.
