Antlerite is a greenish hydrous copper sulfate mineral characterized by its emerald green cross-fiber veinlets. The mineral reaches up to 3 mm in thickness in this specimen, cutting through silicified, iron oxide, and chalcocite-rich porphyry. This specimen originates from the Chuquicamata Mine in Chile, the world's largest open-pit copper mine. While chemically and optically similar to other copper minerals such as malachite and brochantite, antlerite can be distinguished by its lack of effervescence in hydrochloric acid. This particular piece was acquired by Dr. Tarassoff from Schortmann's Minerals in 1960.
