Anglesite

Eureka Hill Mine, Tintic District, Juab Co., Utah
Dimensions: 5.8x5.9x1.8 cm
Largest crystal size: 5 mm
Price: CA

This is a rare and significant specimen from the long-extinct Eureka Hill Mine, part of the historic Tintic Mining District in Juab County, Utah. Once one of the most productive mining regions in the western United States, the Tintic District was renowned for its rich deposits of silver, lead, gold, copper, and arsenic. Though mining has ceased, the district remains famous among collectors for its classic and sometimes rare secondary mineral assemblages.

This specimen features numerous highly lustrous, glassy, and transparent crystals of anglesite—a secondary lead sulfate mineral that forms through the oxidation of galena (lead sulfide), which was the primary lead ore in the district. The anglesite crystals exhibit sharp, well-defined faces and excellent form, with some showing complex modifications that reflect their careful growth in open cavities.

Anglesite specimens from Eureka Hill are uncommon and especially prized when they display such clarity, lustre, and crystal development. This piece is not only aesthetically appealing but also mineralogically significant, representing a fine example of secondary sulfate mineralization from one of Utah’s most storied mining localities.
